Femicide, defined as the intentional killing of women and girls due to their gender, remains a harsh reality in many parts of the world, including Kenya. On 27th Jan 2024, together with other civil society organizations (CSOs), stakeholders, and community members in Kisumu County, We took to the streets to protest against the prevalent cases of femicide that have plagued the nation. Led by human rights activists and organizations, women and men marched from Kondele to the central business district, demanding an end to violence against women. Carrying placards with powerful messages such as “STOP KILLING US,” “FEMICIDE IS A HUMAN RIGHT VIOLATION,” and “SHE WAS SOMEONE,” and more, the team raised their voices against the alarming trend of gender-based violence. The protest was not merely a symbolic gesture; it also aimed to effect tangible change. CSOs presented a petition outlining the demands and necessary reforms needed from both the government’s law enforcement agencies and the gender department. Honorable Ruth Odinga emphasized her role as an advocate for women’s rights, stating, “It’s my duty to address the pressing issues affecting women and use my voice to ensure they live without fear.”
Hon. Ruth Odinga being handed the petition by human rights activists and organizations in KisumuThe sentiment echoed throughout the demonstration was clear: women, as sisters, daughters, and mothers, deserve to live free from the constant threat of violence and fear. We emphasized that femicide should never be justified, regardless of circumstances. The responsibility to protect women rests not only on law enforcement but on society as a whole. We also called for a shift in societal attitudes and norms that perpetuate violence against women. This urged individuals to challenge biases, stereotypes, and harmful beliefs that contribute to gender-based violence. The message was simple yet powerful:
Women are human beings deserving of dignity, respect, and safety.
As organizations advocating for human rights, we are at the forefront of this advocacy, raising awareness about femicide and campaigning for policies that protect women’s rights. Every action, whether through protests or policy advocacy, plays a crucial role in reducing violence against women and creating a safer society for all.
I DON’T NEED TO BE YOUR RELATIVE FOR YOU TO RELATE TO ME!
The rally in Kisumu County serves as a reminder that femicide is not just a statistic but a human rights issue that demands urgent attention. It’s a call to action for individuals, communities, and governments to work together to end gender-based violence and ensure that every woman and girl can live without fear of harm.
