Highlights from the 6th Girl Summit in Kisumu (10th & 11th October 2024)

Eagle Wings Organization (EWO) was proud to participate in the 6th Girl Summit held in Kisumu, an event that brought together girls and young women from across the county in a powerful display of unity, passion, and determination to create meaningful change.

Day 1.

The summit opened with vibrant energy as participants gathered, eager to make their voices heard. The day began with inspiring speeches from key leaders and role models who highlighted the critical role young women play in shaping their futures and building stronger communities. These opening remarks set the tone for an empowering day of learning and collaboration.

Interactive workshops followed, covering essential topics such as menstrual health, climate change, and leadership development. The sessions were designed to provide girls with the knowledge, skills, and confidence to advocate for themselves and their communities. The atmosphere was one of camaraderie and support as participants actively engaged in discussions, sharing their experiences and learning from one another.

By the close of Day 1, it was clear that these young women were not only inspired but also ready to take action on the issues that matter most to them. The day was filled with laughter, meaningful conversations, and moments of self-discovery that left everyone feeling empowered and motivated.

Day 2.

On Day 2, the girls and young women united once again, this time to present a comprehensive memorandum to key policymakers. This well-thought-out document captured their aspirations and concerns while offering strategic recommendations aimed at improving the lives of girls throughout the region.

Among the key proposals was a call for increased budget allocations for menstrual hygiene products, ensuring that no girl misses school due to a lack of resources. The memorandum also emphasized the importance of integrating climate change education across sectors to prepare future generations for environmental challenges.

The girls advocated for the establishment of rescue centers for flood survivors, the creation of better reproductive health policies, and the launch of mentorship programs to foster the next generation of women leaders. Mental health support was a priority, with a strong push for more accessible and affordable services throughout the healthcare system.

The summit concluded with organizations and participants encouraging the County Government to reinforce its commitment to gender equality, particularly by reviewing and strengthening the Sexual and Gender-Based Violence (SGBV) policy to provide better protection and support for victims.

EWO’s participation in this transformative event underscores our ongoing commitment to empowering young women and amplifying their voices. The 6th Girl Summit was a powerful reminder that when girls are given the platform to lead, they can drive the change needed to build a more equitable and just society.
